SEND including our Physical Disability provision

School Ethos and values

At Twydall Primary School we are dedicated to providing the very best care and education for all of our children. Twydall is a mainstream primary school which caters for children of all abilities. Some children will be identified as having SEND and will need additional support to enable them to access the curriculum and make good progress alongside their peers.

As a school, we strive to promote a positive and supportive, fully inclusive environment that meets the individual needs of its pupils. We have high expectations for all our children and work in partnership with parents and professional agencies to support children to meet these expectations. Together we ensure all children make progress and that they are a member of our school community.

Specialist Resource Provision for children with Physical Disabilities (PD):

Our school benefits from encompassing a long-established provision for children who have physical disabilities and/or medical needs.  The PD Provision accepts children who have Education, Health and Care Plans, where their primary need is PD, from Foundation Stage through to the end of Key Stage 2.  Our trained staff are able to modify and adapt teaching materials, use specialist equipment that is available, facilitate physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions and support a range of complex medical needs.

The children who are supported within our PD provision are fully included in the mainstream classroom and where adaptations are required, these are implemented within the classroom setting. Children within our PD provision are not taight in a separate 'unit' or 'hub' away from their peers, other than when they are receiving specific interventions. The school benefits from having specially adapted personal care facilities, a sensory room and a physiotherapy (soft play) space with a wide range of specialist equipment available to these pupils, including the use of hoists.

ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR THE PD PROVISION AT TWYDALL SCHOOL - A FUNDED LA PROVISION

  • Referrals are made by the Local Authority's SEN Panel.
  • All pupils will have an Education, Health and Care Plan where a Physical Disability is the Primary Need.
  • Pupils' cognitive ability may range from below average to above average, but they should be able to access the National Curriculum at a stage within approximately 2 years of their chronological age.
  • Pupils will have the potential to cope in an environment that is fully integrated with the mainstream, with appropriate support.

A PLACE MAY NOT BE OFFERED IF:

  • The agreed number of funded places by the authority is fully subscribed, or the number of children with EHCPs in the required year group is at maximum, and admitting children over this number would be incompatible with the provision of efficient education for all children or the efficient use of resources.
  • There is evidence of severe or complex learning difficulties in addition to the physical disability.
  • The admission of a pupil would compromise the health and safety of the children and/or staff within the school or would compromise or disrupt the education of children already in attendance. Siblings are not automatically admitted.
  • The needs of the child are such that it would be expected that their local mainstream school should be able to make the necessary adaptations to meet the child's PD needs.
